Artificial Neural Network for Predicting Iodine Deficiency in the First Trimester of Pregnancy in Healthy Women

Iodine deficiency in Spain is a persisting public health problem and the prescription of potassium iodide is recommended during pregnancy. The purpose of this study was to develop an Artificial Neural Network (ANN) to predict the risk factors of iodine deficiency during pregnancy, and compare the results obtained with a logistic regression model. Two hundred forty-four healthy pregnant women were included in a descriptive and prospective study in their first trimester of pregnancy. Relationship between Thyroid Status during the First Trimester of Pregnancy and Neonatal Well-Being

Iodine is an essential micronutrient for the synthesis of thyroid hormones. The proper functioning of the thyroid axis is essential for the normal development of the nervous system, especially in the first trimester of gestation. The aim of the present study was to analyze the perinatal outcomes, anthropometry, and APGAR test scores of newborns and to relate them to maternal thyroid status. A total of 190 newborns participated in the study. Joda deficīts grūtniecēm teritoriālā griezumā un tā ietekme uz intelektuālo attīstību bērniem Latvijā

Latvijā ilgstoši pastāv joda deficīts, kas ir bīstams sabiedrības veselībai un intelektuālajai attīstībai. Pat neliels joda deficīts grūtniecības periodā izraisa bērna IQ pazemināšanos, līdz ar to vēlāk arī iespējamu valsts IKP per capita samazināšanos. Uzdevumi: izvērtēt joda pietiekamību Latvijas grūtniecēm reģionālā griezumā, sakarības ar saistītiem faktoriem, kā arī censties identificēt sakarību starp joda koncentrāciju urīnā (JU) skolēniem un atzīmēm valsts eksāmenos. Given the fact that a large number of radiological examinations using iodine-based contrast media (ICM) are performed in everyday practice, clinicians should be aware of potential ICM-induced thyroid dysfunction (TD). ICM can induce hyperthyroidism (Hyper) or hypothyroidism (Hypo) due to supraphysiological concentrations of iodine in the contrast solution. The prevalence of ICM-induced TD varies from 1 to 15%. ICM-induced Hyper is predominantly found in regions with iodine deficiency and in patients with underlying nodular goiter or latent Graves’ disease. Iodine Deficiency in Latvia: Current Status and Need for National Recommendations

Abstract In the absence of a mandatory salt iodisation programme, two nationwide cross-sectional cluster surveys revealed persisting iodine deficiency among Latvian schoolchildren during the spring season and a noteworthy iodine deficiency in pregnant women in Latvia; these deficiencies warrant intervention. The consequences of mild-to-moderate iodine deficiency during pregnancy and lactation can adversely affect foetal brain development. Milk as an Essential Source of Iodine in Latvian Population

Abstract Milk and dairy products are studied as alternative iodine sources, because salt iodisation is controversial due to high salt consumption leading to cardiovascular diseases. However, the iodine concentration in milk markedly varies. This study evaluated the iodine concentration in cow’s milk available in the Latvian market. Iodine and fat concentration was analysed with a spectrophotometer “Varian Cary 50” based ISO 2446:2008 in 20 milk samples.
